GB Sambo on the move

Sambo in Great Britain is on the Move

British Sambo is certainly advancing and 2016 so far has proved a great success. Our year started with the Introduction of the BSF Sport Sambo Instructors Certificate with the first course being held at the BSF Centre of Excellence in Sittingbourne and was led by Sports Sambo National Coach John Clarke. This Certificate is the only one recognised by the UK Governing Body for Sambo the British Sombo Federation. With Matthew Clempner being put in charge of Combat Sambo has already paid dividends with him running instruction courses in Manchester.

On the competition front we have already run the most successful Sport Sambo British Open in years this was held in Sittingbourne (click for more details) and the end of April UKSA will be running the British Combat Sambo Open on behalf of the BSF in Liverpool. The entries so far show it will be the best ever-Combat Sambo Event in GB.

There is a lot going on National Coach John Clarke is organising several tournaments in Sport Sambo for Adults and Children in Sittingbourne plus he is organising a weekend Summer Camp in August. Matthew Clempner will be organising the first ever Open England Combat Sambo Championships in Manchester, English Sambo Federation President Colin Carrott will be organising an Open England Sports Sambo Championships for Adults and Children in Folkestone. We are still waiting for details of the Presidents Cup to be held in Meadow bank Edinburgh which is scheduled for September/October Scottish President Robin Hyslop is in charge of the 3rd Presidents Cup to be held in the UK. Moves are a foot to have the first Sport Sambo in Championships in Northern Ireland.
Sambo in GB doesn’t have a massive following but we are getting bigger, the BSF has clubs in nearly every part of mainland UK and N Ireland and we are looking for representatives in Wales to complete our coverage. In 1986 a few members in Sittingbourne formed the BSF after the British Team success in the 1985 World Games. Since its formation the BSF has organised British Open every year since then, it organised the 1989 European Championships, World Championships 1992 both in Herne Bay, 2014 Presidents Cup Dartford, 2015 Presidents Cup Manchester and it has entered a GB Team in nearly all World Championships since then plus it has been a member of FIAS since 1986.
What is so pleasing in the early days the BSF was mainly based in Southern England now it stretches all over the UK with founder members Martin Clarke, Valerie Clarke and Alan Kontozi  still involved

British Sport Sambo Open

Russell Dodds Memorial
British Sport Sambo Open Championships
Saturday April 2nd 2016
Swallows Leisure Centre Sittingbourne Kent

British Open 2016 Medal winners
It was a special day April 2nd Samboists were celebrating the life of Russell Dodds. The Angels took Russell last June but he will be remembered by countless amounts of People.

Russell was a very keen Samboist and spent several years promoting Sambo by travelling the World, he competed in World Masters, Trained for a week at St Petersburg, attended World Championships and represented GB at World Congress. On a National Basis he was English Sambo Federation President and organised several British Open Championships in Bedford, he also helped organise the Presidents Cup, he founded the very successful Bedford Grappling Academy which is now run by Adam Dodds and Kerry Maxwell, the strength of a Club is when it continues to run after a major tragedy like this especially when it has been handed down Father to Son

attempt at Flying Armlock

For several years Russell had organised the British Open in Bedford, which was the ideal venue in the middle of the country, and close to Aeroport with his death the event had to be moved back to Sittingbourne the place where the BSF first started

The BSF decision to organise the Sport Sambo event in Sittingbourne Venue was a controversial one but turned out to be the right decision. The fact most Sport Samboists come from the South and as the Combat Sambo is very popular in the North a separate date was arranged in April with the Venue for Combat Sambo being held in Liverpool. It has yet to be decided whether holding the two events separately will be a good thing for British Sambo. The BSF EC have asked John Clarke and Colin Carrott to organised next year’s event.  John has contacts with an Events Company and it is hoped they can organise an event in the Birmingham area if not he tells me the event will return to Bedford The date will change to the beginning of March giving selected competitors chance to raise funds for the Europeans which always held in May

Leg Lock attempt

The British Open attracted 80 Male entrants from all over England in fact more Men entered this year then last years Sambo event,  GB does struggle to attract women with only 4 women entering the event and all in different weight classes, this year the BSF decided not to run a children’s event as we were working in tandem with an IBF Junior Judo event in the same venue. This will change next year and John has promised to organise a British Junior event at his Warriors Grappling Academy in Sittingbourne later on in the year.
Ryan Cotton wins final

Warriors Club

As mentioned players came form all over England but also we had players from France, Bulgaria, Russia, Lithuania and Latvia obviously most of these are resident in the UK. It some what annoying that we do not get support from other FIAS Countries what they must realise if they want the BSF support their events they must support us.  The first British Open was held in 1986 with just 15 competitors in Sittingbourne we have moved on since then the BSF has competed in every World Championships and organised the 1989 European Championships and the 1992 World Championships both in Herne Bay. Russell had hoped to run the World Masters in 2018 in Bedford but that is now just a pipe dream.
The Swallows is the ideal venue for this type of Competition and since it Opened the Clarke Family alongside the Young Judo Club/Swale Martial Arts Club/Warriors Grappling Academy has run countless competitions in Judo, Sambo, Kent Belt Wrestling, Kurash, Karate, Shiai Jutsu and CombatSombo Wrestling, sadly this may be the last event at the Venue because of the Hire Cost.  Sport Sambo has had a bit of resurgence in the South East thanks to the very successful Warriors Grappling Academy coached by BSF Sport Sambo National Coach John Clarke and this can be seen in the results. John’s training of Technique and fitness has proved dividends and the fact that he concentrates on Sambo Techniques

Andrew Moshanov presents medals

Two players stood out in the event first was in the 100k plus where Karl Etherington from FORMA done one of the best throws of the day with a devastating Hip Throw which buried his opponent and made the ground shake my father used to say “6ft up 8ft down”. Then there was 20-year-old Ryan Cotton from the Warriors who we believe is a potential World Medallist he moved over from Judo and has trained with John for the last 9 months. His main opposition was to be the very experience Lithuanian International VENIAMAN DRAGAN but he caught him with a devastating Suplex a real Sambo throw and allowed him to claim the British Title. Danny Carrott who has won many British Titles got out of sick bed to enter but after losing his first fight it was obvious he was not up to the task so he was withdrawn.
The standard this year was the best I have ever seen it was the first time in the History of the competition that we saw proper Samboists competing and using proper Sambo Techniques

John Clarke and Colin Carrott will be organising squad training sessions in Sittingbourne and Bedford all those British Players who made medals will automatically be in the squad and some players will be co-opted. The BSF main aim is to get a team ready for the World 17/18 years and 19/20 years World Championships in October Romania and World Senior Championships November Bulgaria sadly the closing date for Europeans is April 14th to get visas, travel organised in that time will be impossible that is why next years British Open will be moved to the beginning of March. There are plenty of other Sambo Tournaments throughout the World Squad members can enter such as the Paris Tournament in June to enter they will need the permission of the BSF. The main problem is all these events are self-funding, lets not forget there will be several Sambo events at BSF Centre of Excellence in Sittingbourne plus events in Bedford and the English Open in Folkestone

Old timers Martin Clarke Alan Kontozi
The BSF would like to thank Andrew Moshanov FIAS Technical Director for presenting the medals, John Clarke for organising the British, Colin Carrott, Paul Sawyer, Darren Richardson, Pete Wise for refereeing, all the table officials. It was good to see Honorary Presidents Valerie Clarke (no surprise there) and Alan Kontozi. Alan was the Brit alongside Brenda Jones to awarded an International Referee Certificate at the World Games in 1985

All in all a very exciting day of Sambo
